You can take your date on a tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland and experience the history of one of our country’s most iconic musical artists.  If you’re looking for more of a party, try stopping by Beale Street. Ripe with more than two-dozen characteristic bars, restaurants serving tasty local food, shops, and live music around every corner, the historic Beale Street is a lively place to spend an evening.  You won’t run out of options here and certainly won’t become bored—it isn’t called the “Birthplace of Rock ’n Roll” for nothing. Mississippi Attorney General Clarifies Meaning of Newest Gun Law

January 2, 2014 by GNGF Leave a Comment

As a criminal defense attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, most cases I see involving weapon or gun possession charges often are based in the misunderstanding of gun laws, be it by the carrier or law enforcement.

Last month, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood attempted to clarify the state’s newest gun law, hopefully eliminating much of the confusion. Hood said gun owners with enhanced permits may take their concealed weapons to places like voting booths, government meetings, or state airports. [Read more…]

Caught On Tape: Officers Violating Rights At DUI Checkpoint

December 11, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

If you are pulled over by police in Northern Mississippi or the Memphis metro area, there are certain steps, rules, and protocols that officers must follow.

These apply at DUI checkpoints as well.

Unfortunately, police officers do not always respect the constitutional rights of citizens when pulling someone over for a traffic stop. Sadly, some officers realize that the average person does not fully understand all of their rights, and take advantage of this lack of knowledge.

In some cases, however, if you are pulled over a DUI checkpoint, officers may abuse their authority even if you do show a knowledge and thorough understanding of your rights. [Read more…]

Fifteen Percent of Southern Drivers Still Don’t Wear Seat Belts

November 20, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

Seat Belt | Auto Accident Attorney | Stroud, Flechas & DaltonAs an auto accident attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, I’ve seen the importance of wearing your seatbelt in many cases. Buckling up is such a simple precaution, yet so many drivers in Northern Mississippi and Memphis choose to avoid the safety measure altogether.

Why is that, you ask? I can’t tell you exactly why many people choose not to wear their seat belt, but I can give you statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

Let’s begin with some positives: seat belt use in 2012 rose to eighty-six percent in the United States, up from eighty-four percent the year before.

Seat belt use across the country has shown an increasing trend since 1994, when it was at only fifty-eight percent. [Read more…]

Marijuana Legalization in Mississippi Struck Down for Fifth Straight Year

November 12, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

Did you know that the idea of legalizing medical marijuana in Mississippi approached the state legislature this year?

As an experienced drug possession defense attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, I consistently keep tabs on activity concerning marijuana legalization in the state.

For the fifth straight year, Sen. Deborah Dawkins introduced the medical marijuana legislation to the Mississippi State Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted down the bill—SB 2369— without granting it a hearing. [Read more…]

Boxer Dies From Brain Injury

November 7, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

Concussions and brain injuries in sports have taken the legal spotlight in the past few years. Parents and student-athletes, along with coaches, administrators, and politicians, are becoming more aware of the dangers of brain injuries resulting from sports.

As a brain injury attorney serving Northern Mississippi and the Memphis metro area, I too have kept a close eye on any news or studies pertaining to brain injuries in athletics, such as the long-term effects of such injuries and the roles of coaches, trainers, doctors, parents, and the athletes themselves in overall player safety.

A recent article from ESPN caught my attention, highlighting a boxer who died of a brain injury on Oct. 23 after suffering a brutal knockout. [Read more…]

Racial Inequality Present in Nursing Home Treatment?

October 30, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

As our parents and grandparents reach an age when they can no longer care for themselves, we recognize that it may be in their best interests to move them into a nursing home community, which can give around-the-clock care and companionship.

Unfortunately, not all nursing homes treat our loved ones as we would wish, sometimes to the point of brutality or negligence. But could skin color play any role in this.

A recent article from MyFox Memphis unveiled a tragic statistic: predominately African American nursing homes deliver poorer care. They also tend to perform worse financially than homes with no or few minorities.  [Read more…]
