Mississippi Highways Rated Worst in Nation for Automobile Accident-Related Deaths

The Mississippi Highway Patrol recently reported that the state saw only one car accident related fatality during the busy, and almost always deadly, Fourth of July holiday weekend. The state’s Highway Patrol spokesman Ray Hall said that one 56-year-old man from Canton was killed in a one-car accident near Camden. Apparently the man lost control of his van and ran off the road, hitting a pole.

The lack of fatalities may, at least in part, be credited to zealous enforcement by state police agencies. Over the holiday, Hall says state troopers issued some 3,227 traffic citations, arrested 95 suspected drunk drivers, and made 4 felony arrests. Over the same period Hall says state troopers investigated 47 traffic collisions. [Read more…]

Interesting Numbers Regarding Adams County, MS Youth Crime

A recent report in the Natchez Democrat dealt with northern Mississippi youth crime statistics and discussed how the trends do not appear to follow conventional wisdom. Though many people might assume that when school is out incidents of youth crime would increase, the opposite is actually true.

Looking at arrest records for the past two years, the data shows that the number of Natchez and Adams County young people arrested are among the lowest in the summer months. Though this seems counterintuitive, a local Youth Court judge says the reason is because kids are dispersed throughout the community and not all located in one spot, something that’s conducive to committing crime. Mississippi Couple Injured In Tractor-Trailer Accident

A woman from Blue Mountain, MS was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center after being involved in a terrible accident that left her with life-threatening injuries. According to police, the terrible accident involved a tractor-trailer colliding with a 1999 Chevy Lumina.

Mississippi Highway Patrol says that the accident occurred on Highway 15 as the couple attempted to turn left onto County Road 142. The couple, Jason Roe and Margaret Medlin, made the turn around 9 a.m. when they were hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The semi, a 2014 Freightliner, was driven by Danny Sanders. [Read more…]

Researchers Point To Rising Danger Of Car Accidents Texting While Driving

Horrifying news out of AAA which recently discovered in one survey that nearly eighty percent of all car wrecks in Virginia are caused by distracted driving. The study, which focused on drivers along the I-95 corridor, also discovered that 20 percent of motorists admitted to texting while driving more than once in the previous month.

AAA says that while the survey was restricted to those driving along I-95, they believe the results can be broadly applied across the rest of the country. The automobile organization surveyed 900 drivers who frequently travel through the I-95 corridor and the results found that 20 percent admitted that they have nearly been involved in accidents due to their own distraction behind the wheel. Safety Board Asks States to Lower BAC Limit for DUIs

In a surprise announcement earlier this month, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) proposed that all states lower the legal limit of blood alcohol content from the current 0.08 to 0.05. The push by the NTSB is part of a larger objective by the federal agency to completely end the occurrence of drunk driving deaths in the United States.

The NTSB says that U.S. is behind the times in terms of its BAC limit. The agency claims that more than 100 other countries, including almost all of Western Europe have now moved to a 0.05 BAC limit. The agency says that Europe has seen a 50 percent decrease in the instances of drunk driving fatalities since implementing the new, lower limit. The NTSB says that if states lower the limit to 0.05 then an estimated 500 to 800 lives could be saved each year. [Read more…]

Deadly Mississippi Car Accident involves Members of the MVSU Football Team

A deadly car accident occurred just a few weeks ago in the tiny town of Itta Bena, Mississippi. According to police officers in the area, a car packed with football players from Mississippi Valley State drove off the road and crashed their vehicle, a brutal accident that left the teenage driver dead and three of his teammates seriously injured.

According to authorities, the driver was a sophomore place-kicker, Kevin Monzon. The 19-year-old is said to have died at the scene of the accident which took place in Lefore County, Mississippi. Troopers said that one of the passengers, junior Marcus Thompson, was critically injured in the accident and required a helicopter transport to a hospital in Jackson for treatment. Two other passengers in the car were less seriously injured and only required ambulance transport to the local Lefore County hospital. [Read more…]

Mississippi DUI Ignition Interlock Law Moves Towards Implementation

A recent report found that more and more ignition interlock devices are being used in Mississippi DUI cases. Given a recent law that was signed into effect by the Governor, the use of the devices is expected to explode in the state.

The law was initially proposed by State Rep. Mark Formby who recently lost his five-year-old niece in a drunk driving accident. In April, Formby pushed for a new law which would mandate the use of ignition interlock devices for those defendants who have had previous DUI convictions.

Formby says that he cannot help but think about how different his family’s life would be had the law been in effect prior to his niece’s death. Formby says in an attempt to spare other families the same pain he endured, he became an avid advocate for the ignition interlock devices which are designed to keep an impaired driving from turning on a car. Memphis Vehicle Crash Leaves Bus Driver Dead After Collision with Cement Truck

Police in Memphis say that the driver of a Memphis Area Transit Authority bus was killed after being involved in an accident with a cement truck. The woman, identified as Chantel Sanders, was the only person on board the bus at the time of the crash as the bus was not yet in service.

Police say the accident happened around 8:40 in the morning on Tuesday May 21st. Witnesses said that the bus and the cement truck collided after the cement truck driver lost control while merging into a southbound lane from South Parkway. Even more tragically, the force of the collision threw the driver out of the front windshield of the bus where she then became stuck. Sanders was dragged underneath the bus and never had time to get away. [Read more…]

Mississippi Man Dies after Crash with Drunk Driver

Mississippi Highway Patrol has announced that a 91-year-old man from Natchez, Mississippi, died last month in a terrible car accident caused by a suspected drunk driver. Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Rusty Boyd said that John H. Buckles died after his truck was hit from behind on U.S. 84 and then rolled into a ditch.

Police say that the accident happened at 7:23 p.m. near the Adams County Correctional Center. Mr. Buckles was driving westbound in the far right lane when another truck driven by 30-year-old Cameron Collier smashed directly into the back of Buckle’s pickup.

Officers say the force of the accident was so great that Buckle’s truck was thrown off the roadway. Once the truck left the road it rolled several times before coming to a rest at the bottom of a ditch, upside down. Emergency responders called for an airlift for Buckles who was taken to the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana but sadly died along the way. [Read more…]

Cement Truck Crashes Into Memphis Funeral Procession Killing One Woman

Police in Memphis say they are continuing to investigate a deadly accident that involved an out of control cement truck crushing two nearby cars. The terrible accident left one woman dead and the occupants of the other car with serious injuries.

Police say the accident took place on Third Street in downtown Memphis on a Sunday afternoon. The street was crowded at the time and many witnesses say they are surprised the accident wasn’t worse. Authorities say the accident started when a funeral procession that was going heading down nearby Shelby Drive brought traffic to a sudden stop. The quick stop was a problem for the heavy concrete truck. [Read more…]
