Icy Roads in Memphis Cause Women to Jump off Overpass

January 7, 2014 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Northern Mississippi and the Memphis metro area have experienced an unseasonably cold winter thus far, with more frigid temperatures headed our way.

With the cold come freezing rain, ice, and snow, all of which make driving conditions more dangerous than usual.

Recently, an auto accident caused by ice in Memphis, Tennessee, pushed three women to jump off an overpass guardrail, falling nearly 40 feet to the ground.

According to a report from WMCTV in Memphis, 47-year-old Pamela Byrd Davis was driving home late one Saturday night when she became involved in a multi-car pileup on the Walnut Grove Road-Humphreys Boulevard overpass. [Read more…]

Fifteen Percent of Southern Drivers Still Don’t Wear Seat Belts

November 20, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

Seat Belt | Auto Accident Attorney | Stroud, Flechas & DaltonAs an auto accident attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, I’ve seen the importance of wearing your seatbelt in many cases. Buckling up is such a simple precaution, yet so many drivers in Northern Mississippi and Memphis choose to avoid the safety measure altogether.

Why is that, you ask? I can’t tell you exactly why many people choose not to wear their seat belt, but I can give you statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

Let’s begin with some positives: seat belt use in 2012 rose to eighty-six percent in the United States, up from eighty-four percent the year before.

Seat belt use across the country has shown an increasing trend since 1994, when it was at only fifty-eight percent. [Read more…]

Mississippi Highways Rated Worst in Nation for Automobile Accident-Related Deaths

July 18, 2013 by Leave a Comment

The Mississippi Highway Patrol recently reported that the state saw only one car accident related fatality during the busy, and almost always deadly, Fourth of July holiday weekend. The state’s Highway Patrol spokesman Ray Hall said that one 56-year-old man from Canton was killed in a one-car accident near Camden. Apparently the man lost control of his van and ran off the road, hitting a pole.

The lack of fatalities may, at least in part, be credited to zealous enforcement by state police agencies. Over the holiday, Hall says state troopers issued some 3,227 traffic citations, arrested 95 suspected drunk drivers, and made 4 felony arrests. Over the same period Hall says state troopers investigated 47 traffic collisions. [Read more…]

Researchers Point To Rising Danger Of Car Accidents Texting While Driving

May 23, 2013 by Leave a Comment

Horrifying news out of AAA which recently discovered in one survey that nearly eighty percent of all car wrecks in Virginia are caused by distracted driving. The study, which focused on drivers along the I-95 corridor, also discovered that 20 percent of motorists admitted to texting while driving more than once in the previous month.

AAA says that while the survey was restricted to those driving along I-95, they believe the results can be broadly applied across the rest of the country. The automobile organization surveyed 900 drivers who frequently travel through the I-95 corridor and the results found that 20 percent admitted that they have nearly been involved in accidents due to their own distraction behind the wheel.
