Bananas Are the Least of Your Concerns When It Comes to Slip and Falls

April 14, 2015 by Leave a Comment

Bananas Are the Least of Your Concerns When It Comes to Slip and FallsOn Saturday mornings, my family would gather around and watch as Looney Tunes villains targeted our favorite characters with anchors and bombs and laugh as Bugs Bunny and friends would retaliate with none other than…banana peels. Although the banana seems less dangerous than your everyday anchor, the slippery peel would turn the characters upside down and flat on their backs.

This theatrical yet serious act was not invented by the Looney Tunes characters though. Rather, the origin of the dangerous banana began in the early 1900s when the popular fruit peel would be left on the ground to rot and create a slimy, slippery hazard, according to the Myth Busters on Discovery. Winter Slip and Fall Safety Tips and Tricks

January 19, 2015 by Leave a Comment

Street ViewIt’s that time of year again where the leaves are gone, nights are long, and the cold, winter chill is upon us. While Mississippi can’t complain too much about the frightful winter weather, the weather has increasingly become hazardous for the entire country.

It is hard to forget the frigid winter that we had last year. The polar vortex struck Desoto County and the north and south both faced troubles. States on the northern border like New York, Connecticut, Minnesota and Ohio had lots of snow and below freezing wind chills, while the southern states like Georgia, Tennessee, and Mississippi learned how to deal with ice, and winter traffic delays. Mississippi Supreme Court Rules Against Slip and Fall Victim

October 8, 2012 by Leave a Comment

Pratt v. Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport Authority

The Mississippi Supreme Court released an unfortunate decision recently when it yet again sided with a defendant in a personal injury case. The Court reversed the Court of Appeals’ reversal of a summary judgment issued in a slip and fall case.

The slip and fall incident occurred at the Gulfport-Biloxi Regional Airport. The plaintiff is a decorated Air Force doctor who sued the airport after he slipped and fell down a wet set of aluminum steps. This was one case where simply saying “slip and fall” fails to do the situation justice. The Air Force doctor actually slipped and fell down two stories worth of steps. [Read more…]

DeSoto County: Horn Lake, MS woman awarded $60,000 in damages against Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in slip and fall case

December 9, 2010 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Brenda Dowland, a resident of Horn Lake, Mississippi, was visiting her husband at Baptist DeSoto on September 30, 2008, when she decided to visit the hospital’s gift shop. After turning from the lobby onto the hallway where the gift shop is located, Ms. Dowland slipped and fell on a portion of the tile floor that had recently been mopped by an employee of Baptist Desoto Hospital. The only warning sign posted was at the opposite end of the hallway, and it could not be seen from where Ms. Dowland fell.

As a result of her slip and fall, Ms. Dowland suffered personal injuries to her right arm for which she still undergoes pain management treatment today. [Read more…]

Southaven, Mississippi “Trip and Fall” Results in $1.15 Million Verdict for Horn Lake, Mississippi Couple

November 18, 2010 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

On December 23, 2007, Horn Lake, MS resident Vicki Whiteaker was shopping at the Fred’s Dollar Store in Southaven, MS picking up last minute Christmas items. While exiting the store and watching for traffic in the busy parking lot, she fell over a barricade that was placed in her pathway to the parking lot by Fred’s employees. This barricade (measuring just 12 inches off of the ground–about the height of a trip wire) was installed approximately six months before her fall, and was supposedly installed to deter shoplifting.

As a result of her fall, Ms. Whiteaker suffered life altering injuries to her left arm and her right wrist. In addition, the fall broke several of her teeth. [Read more…]
