Residents from Southaven, MS to Hernando, MS may soon see big changes to the landscaping at intersections and the visitor centers up and down Interstate 55 in Desoto County, MS. According to the Clarion Ledger, Desoto County, through DeSoto Greenways, has applied for a $950,000 grant to fund eco-friendly landscaping up and down the highway.
Hernando Greenways coordinator has indicated that this project could set the benchmark statewide. With more than sixty-eight thousand vehicles entering the county from Tennessee on Interstate 55 each day, the newly constructed “green islands” would promote tourism, educate newcomers to Mississippi about our communities, and provide a boost to the local economy.
