What should I do if I have been subjected to mistreatment while in custody?
If you’ve been mistreated while you’re in custody, either by a jailer or by another inmate, the first thing you should do is report it. Most jails, most police departments, have internal affairs divisions that are there for the sole purpose of taking complaints from inmates or detainees against jailers or officers, or other inmates, for that matter. The second thing I would tell you to do is to, while you’re in custody, make sure you get the names of those individuals who may have seen or have knowledge about what happened. At the end of the day, it’s going to be a he said, she said scenario, and so you want to have those extra witnesses or extra proof available to you when you need it.
