My child was caught shoplifting a couple of weeks ago. What can we expect when we go to court if this was his/her first offense?
Depending upon the age of the child at the time that the offense was committed, the child could be in juvenile court here in the state of Mississippi. If that’s the case, it’s a closed proceeding, not open to the public. An attorney is recommended for helping a child through that process. If the child is over the age of 18 and is charged with shoplifting, he’ll be handled as an adult. I do recommend hiring an attorney to assist him because if convicted on those charges, it could carry jail time and stiff penalties.
