The insurance company wants me to sign paperwork (med auth—release) and give a recorded statement. What should I do?
We advise clients that if you’ve been involved in an accident and the other party’s insurance company contacts you to either have you provide them with a recorded statement or have you sign medical authorization forms, which ultimately will allow them to obtain copies of your medical bills and medical records. We advise clients to hold off doing that until they’ve had a chance to speak to an attorney. However, if your insurance company calls and asks for you to provide them with a statement of what happened or to provide them other information about the accident the law in Mississippi, as well as other jurisdictions, require that you cooperate with your own insurance company otherwise you may have a problem with your coverage itself. It may give them an opportunity to deny the claim in the future.
