Fast-Food Employee Denied Health Coverage

April 22, 2014 by Leave a Comment

Fast-food Worker's Compensation | Southaven, MS | Stroud Law FirmToo many employees are denied the coverage they deserve from their employers for injuries received on the job, and employees in the fast-food industry seem to get some of the worst treatment in regards to coverage and compensation.

A Sonic Drive-In worker from Texas had been working for the restaurant for two and a half years when it was one day robbed by two men, according to an article from ABC News.  During the robbery, the employee’s leg was broken.

The robber shut the employee’s leg in a door to keep him from making a move to protect a fellow co-worker.  The injury happened while he was on the clock.  The employee’s broken femur may require surgery. [Read more…]

As an employee in the Northern Mississippi or Memphis area, you trust your employer to provide a safe and friendly working environment in which you can thrive and be successful.

Sadly, not all employers take the steps necessary to secure a safe workplace, putting the wellbeing of their employees behind production and profits.

These were among the changes that went into effect with the recent round of updates to workers compensation laws.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said the changes are a great thing for the state and will help attract new jobs. Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be much worry expressed by the Governor’s Office about how these new laws could harm those people already employed in the state.

Under the new laws, all benefits can be offset regardless of whether the preexisting condition is related to the occupational injury that occurred. [Read more…]

Southaven, MS Growth Means More Workers Comp Injuries

December 29, 2011 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

According to a recent article in the Desoto Times Tribune, the 2010 data from the U.S. Census ranks Southaven, MS as a booming city. From 2000 to 2010, Southaven’s population grew 64% from approximately 21,000 to 45,000, making it the 5th largest city in the state of Mississippi. Despite the enormous growth, however, 10% of families still live below the poverty line, with the median household income for residents over 25 yrs. old just over $34,000.00 per year.

The workforce in Southaven is primarily in the educational services (schools) and healthcare industries. Secondary to these areas (about 15% of the labor force) is engaged in transportation services and industrial labor (warehouse and utility jobs). With such a large percentage of the workforce performing manual labor and warehouse work, there are a large number of work related injuries (workers compensation claims) that occur. [Read more…]
