May 23, 2013 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Police in Memphis say that the driver of a Memphis Area Transit Authority bus was killed after being involved in an accident with a cement truck. The woman, identified as Chantel Sanders, was the only person on board the bus at the time of the crash as the bus was not yet in service.

Dogfighting Raid In Northern Mississippi Leads To Dozens Of Arrests

April 1, 2013 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Law enforcement officials in northern Mississippi have announced that they busted up a major dogfighting ring after launching a raid in Benton County, Mississippi, over the weekend.

The investigation began when the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation decided to cooperate in bringing down what they suspected was a large and organized dogfighting organization.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office said that when the police arrived at the dogfight on Saturday night, at least 200 people from more than 15 states were in attendance with an admission price of $100 per person. Police say some of the attendees came from as far away as California to watch the brutal fight, a sign that police say indicates some of them are relatively high up in the dogfighting world. Olive Branch, Mississippi, Police Buy New Crime Fighting Command Center

March 19, 2013 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

In a somewhat frightening display of technological prowess, the Olive Branch, Mississippi, police department announced that it would be getting a new crime-fighting surveillance trailer containing cameras mounted 15 to 20 feet in the air.

The new mobile surveillance command center was approved by city officials earlier this month. The goal is that it will give police officers a birds-eye view of large outdoor spaces, especially crowded public gathering spots.

The trailer will come equipped with flashing blue lights to alert passersby to the presence of the police and their watchful eyes in the sky. Police Chief Don Gammage has said that the department has reviewed statistics that show that the trailers work to deter crime. When people realize they are being watched, Gammage says, the data shows a steep decline in criminal activity in the immediate vicinity. [Read more…]

Mississippi Counties Moves To Lock Up Habitual Offenders

March 18, 2013 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

The district attorney for several South Mississippi counties has announced that it will be a priority of his office to lock up habitual offenders for as long as possible in an attempt to end what he says is an endless cycle of crime.

Joel Smith, DA for Harrison, Stone and Hancock counties in South Mississippi, said that he grew sick of seeing the same faces in court over and over again. Smith said that while our justice system is built on giving everyone a second chance, he does not believe that people should be given three, four and five opportunities to behave in accordance with the law.

As a result, Smith said that a top priority of his will be using all the legal tools at his disposal to prosecute habitual offenders in his jurisdiction. Just recently this was made a reality when three Harrison County defendants in separate drug cases, each with at least two prior convictions, were sentenced as habitual offenders. [Read more…]

North Mississippi Criminal Defense Attorney: Mississippi Leads the Nation in Number of Prisoners

September 25, 2012 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Numbers were announced this week showing that Mississippi leads the nation in locking people up, with a whopping rate of 686 inmates per 100,000 residents, according to 2010 figures. The national average is much lower, 439 per 100,000 people.

Mississippi also has the grim distinction of being the nation’s leader in terms of average prison sentences, at 6.05 years, compared to the national average of 5.42. For a relatively small state in terms of population, Mississippi has 22,000 people in custody and another 39,000 under supervision.

The numbers announced by the Mississippi Department of Corrections also showed what was likely the root cause of the trouble. A shocking seventy-eight percent of the inmates in the state admit to using alcohol or drugs, many of whom committed crimes while under the influence or to feed a habit. [Read more…]

Mississippi Supreme Court Overturns $300,000 Injury Award

August 29, 2012 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

The Mississippi Supreme Court recently announced that it would uphold a decision that a local judge in Hinds County, Mississippi, made a mistake when determining how much money the city of Jackson was obligated to pay in an injury case involving a police chase.

At the end of last year the Mississippi Court of Appeals overturned a $300,000 damage award in favor of a former police officer from Richland. The officer sued after he sustained injuries in a 2004 car crash when a car being chased by Jackson Police hit his personal vehicle.

The Hinds County Court found that the city of Jackson was 80% at fault for the man’s injuries. [Read more…]

Mississippi Personal Injury Lawyer: Mississippi Dog Bite Claims Cost a Serious Chunk of Change

July 10, 2012 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

While dog bites may not grab headlines very often, it doesn’t mean they aren’t important. Animals still attack people, with the elderly and young children serving as primary victims of such attacks.

According to the CDC, every year there are roughly 4.7 million people who are bitten by dogs. Approximately 800,000 of those dog bites lead to a person seeking medical attention. Most shocking, about 16 people who are bitten by dogs also end up dying each year. [Read more…]
