Decriminalization of Marijuana

April 3, 2014 by Philip Stroud Leave a Comment

Drug Decriminalization | Southaven, MS | Stroud, Flechas & DaltonThe way law enforcement charges for marijuana possession is changing.  With big movements toward legalization – Colorado and Washington now permit marijuana for recreational use – the decriminalization of marijuana possession has begun.

According to an article from Time, Washington D.C.’s City Council recently voted to scale back the penalties for possessing up to one ounce of marijuana.  This is a big move from our nation’s capital and, despite wariness from the federal government, many other states are making the same move. Marijuana Legalization in Mississippi Struck Down for Fifth Straight Year

November 12, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

Did you know that the idea of legalizing medical marijuana in Mississippi approached the state legislature this year?

As an experienced drug possession defense attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, I consistently keep tabs on activity concerning marijuana legalization in the state.

For the fifth straight year, Sen. Deborah Dawkins introduced the medical marijuana legislation to the Mississippi State Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted down the bill—SB 2369— without granting it a hearing. [Read more…]

Mississippi Man Arrested For DUI Charged With Drug Crime After Officers Find Pills In His Shoes

April 22, 2013 by Leave a Comment

A Mississippi man from Escatawpa was arrested late last month for driving under the influence. It was only after his arrest that officers discovered he had drugs hidden in his shoes, a find that resulted in additional drug charges for the 25-year-old Moss Point, Mississippi, man.

Police say they pulled over Jessie Shelton Caudill in Escatawpa after an officer noticed the man failed to dim his bright lights while driving through a residential area with other vehicles. Officers then arrested Caudill after he failed a series of field sobriety tests.

Police took the man to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center to be booked. It was while Caudill was being processed that other officers discovered 19 prescription painkillers hidden in his shoes. Officers say they found 19 Opana (otherwise known as osymorphone) pills. Opana is a prescription drug that is similar to morphine and is prescribed to help combat moderate to severe pain. Drunk Driving Enforcement Continues in Northeast Mississippi

January 24, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

As almost all drivers in northeast Mississippi know, DUI checkpoints are a common sight when out for a ride, especially late at night. Drive on the road long enough and you’re bound to run into one.

In an attempt to keep the state’s roadways safe, officers in northeast Mississippi have been on a strict patrol ever since the end of December. Rather than let up now that the holidays are over, police departments in the region say they will continue with active enforcement to try and catch drunk drivers.

One Mississippi Trooper said that the law enforcement agency would keep troopers working high-traffic areas as well as conduct safety checkpoints and saturation patrols to ensure the safety of Mississippi motorists. Police will especially be relying on checkpoints which officers see as their most effective deterrent. [Read more…]

North Mississippi Criminal Defense Lawyer: Mississippi’s Prescription Drug Abuse Problem Grows Worse

July 18, 2012 by Leave a Comment

Prescription drug abuse has quickly become an epidemic across the country and in Mississippi in particular. Many families across the state have been touched by the terrible effect of loved ones in the grip of prescription pills. Worry about the impact of prescription drugs and their effects on society precipitated the recent Prescription Drug Summit which is currently underway in Jackson. National, state and local agencies have gathered to discuss drug diversion programs and are evaluating effective prevention strategies.

The problem is a big one. Regina LaBelle with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy told those gathered at the Summit that the number of deaths during the height of the heroin and cocaine epidemics pale in comparison the deaths now from prescription drug abuse. Shockingly, more people die from prescription drugs than cocaine, heroin and hallucinogens combined. [Read more…]
