Can Pop Music Help Victims with Severe Brain Injury Remember?

January 15, 2014 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

As a brain injury attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating effects that memory loss can have on a person and his or her family. Parts of the victim’s life may seem like a dream, or worse, as if they never even happened.

Fortunately, there may be hope for people with severe brain injuries. According a new study, listening to pop music can help patients with severe brain injuries recall personal memories.

A recent Daily Mail article discussed the new finding, in which researchers found that patients with brain injuries recalled a similar number of memories as patients without a brain injury. [Read more…]

Surgeon’s Hand Dexterity Could Affect Operation Outcome

December 17, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

When you have a condition or injury requiring surgery, fear and nervousness must be quelled by the consideration and promise of your surgeon, showing that you are in good hands.

Unfortunately, not all surgeons are as capable as others. The skill and precision levels of a surgeon often decide the success and recovery time of a surgery.

In a recent New York Times article, many doctors who scrubbed in with two different surgeons noted extreme differences in accidents during the surgery, the elapsed time during the procedure, the amount of infections or complications following surgery, and the recovery time afterwards. [Read more…]

Mississippi Man Dies after Crash with Drunk Driver

May 6, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

Mississippi Highway Patrol has announced that a 91-year-old man from Natchez, Mississippi, died last month in a terrible car accident caused by a suspected drunk driver. Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Rusty Boyd said that John H. Buckles died after his truck was hit from behind on U.S. 84 and then rolled into a ditch.

Police say that the accident happened at 7:23 p.m. near the Adams County Correctional Center. Mr. Buckles was driving westbound in the far right lane when another truck driven by 30-year-old Cameron Collier smashed directly into the back of Buckle’s pickup.

Officers say the force of the accident was so great that Buckle’s truck was thrown off the roadway. Once the truck left the road it rolled several times before coming to a rest at the bottom of a ditch, upside down. Emergency responders called for an airlift for Buckles who was taken to the Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria, Louisiana but sadly died along the way. [Read more…]

Governors Highway Safety Association Says Motorcycle Accident Deaths Up Dramatically In 2012

April 22, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

Some very worrisome data has experts afraid that 2012 is on track to become the deadliest year yet for motorcycle accidents. The government has been compiling statistics, which indicate that in the first nine months of 2012, a little over 3,900 people died in motorcycle crashes across the country.

While 3,900 is already a large number, the last three months of the year still need to be tabulated before a final figure for 2012 is reached. At the same point in 2011 there were nine percent fewer deaths, a worryingly fast rise in fatal motorcycle crashes. Experts say that by projecting those same numbers out over the last quarter indicates that the total number of motorcycle fatalities could breach the 5,000 mark for the first time ever. [Read more…]

Neighboring Tennessee Supreme Court To Decide Important Field Sobriety Case

April 1, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

The Supreme Court in neighboring Tennessee is poised to handle a potentially important topic about how much weight should be given to field sobriety tests. Specifically, the state’s highest court will consider what to do in cases where a driver passes a field sobriety test but is still suspected of being intoxicated.

The root of the problem is a case from 2009 where a defendant, David Bell, was charged with drunk driving. Surprisingly, his DUI charges came despite passing all six of the field sobriety tests administered by the arresting officer. The judge who first heard his case threw out his charges, saying that the police lacked the necessary probable cause to arrest Bell and that the blood test he was subjected to, which revealed he was indeed intoxicated (0.015 percent BAC), should also be thrown out. Mississippi Close To Passing Mandatory DUI Ignition Interlock Law

April 1, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

A bill making its way through the Mississippi legislature would require all those convicted of DUI to install an ignition interlock device on their car if they ever want to get their driver’s license back. The measure is being sponsored by House Speaker Phillip Gunn and has now moved forward to a conference committee where leaders from both the House and Senate will attempt to reconcile their differences.

The bill would mean that someone who has been found guilty of drunk driving would be required to install a device, similar to a breathalyzer, that must be blown into before the car would be able to start. The device prevents a driver with a BAC above the legal limit (0.08 in Mississippi) from turning on the car. [Read more…]

Mississippi Meteorologist Arrested For Sexual Battery Of A Child

March 18, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

A popular Mississippi weatherman was arrested recently on sexual battery charges due to a series of incriminating Facebook messages exchanged with his 15-year-old victim. The suspect, WLBT-TV weatherman Eric Law, had worked for the Jackson, Mississippi, station since 2004.

Police say that the girl came forward after having sexual contact with Law. She sent the Facebook messages to police and reported that she had spent the night at Law’s home on several occasions. The girl said that she would go to the “Law and Order room” to engage in sexual behavior with the weatherman. The room was called that because Law is a fervent fan of the crime show, an odd twist giving that his own case is playing out much like an episode of his favorite drama. [Read more…]

State Transportation Officials Worried About Increase In Mississippi Train Crashes

February 7, 2013 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

Law enforcement officials in northern Mississippi have announced that they are still investigating a recent accident that happened a few weeks back and involved a train and a parked semi-truck. The train crash was the second collision in Union County, Mississippi, that week and the fourth such accident in the region in less than four weeks.

This “out of the blue” increase in train accidents has officials worried across Mississippi about what needs to be done to stop the rise. National statistics reveal how dangerous trains can be: every 115 minutes a person or a vehicle is hit by a train. The Department of Transportation says that some 5,800 train/vehicle accidents happen every day in the United States and that these crashes result in 600 deaths and injuries to 2,300 people. Mississippi Man Charged with Depraved Heart Murder After Performing Illegal Butt Implant Procedure

September 17, 2012 by Brandon Flechas Leave a Comment

A tragic and bizarre series of events has led a Mississippi man who dresses and lives as a woman to be charged with depraved-heart murder after performing an illegal buttocks implant that eventually resulted in the death of a Georgia woman.

Morris Garner, who also goes by the name Tracey Lynn Garner, has been charged with conducting the procedure in March at his house in Jackson, Mississippi. The Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood announced during a press conference that Garner had no training or legal license to perform such a procedure.

Police officers have said they are now beginning the testing phase of the process and are examining the substance that was injected into the victim and believe it is some kind of counterfeit silicone. [Read more…]
