Americans Serving Undeserved Jail Time

When you hear that a person is sent to jail, you expect that they have committed a crime that deserves jail time.  But, unfortunately, many Americans are sent to jail for committing nonviolent crimes.

According to a recent news article, a report from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) revealed that in 2012 more than 3,000 Americans were serving life sentences in prison without parole for nonviolent crimes. [Read more…]

DeSoto County Developing Green Transportation

April showers bring May flowers: spring is in full swing and that means lots of green, everywhere.  DeSoto County and regional officials are taking advantage of the season by planning and developing the environmentally friendly future of our region.

The officials are developing the Memphis Greenprint and Sustainability Plan and have been holding public meetings to gather feedback from residents about the best way to make the county even more sustainable. [Read more…]

Driver Attacked, Teenager Charged

In some cases of assault, it is hard to tell who committed a crime and who was acting to protect or defend another person.

A Michigan teenager was recently arrested for the assault of a driver who accidentally hit a young boy who had stepped out into the street.  According to a recent news article, the driver was beaten right after he stepped out of his car to check on the injured child. [Read more…]

Little Boy Dies after Pit bull Attack

A dog attack can happen anywhere, it can be unexpected and potentially deadly.  Small children are especially at risk for life-threatening injuries after being attacked by an animal.

Unfortunately, a five-year-old child in Alabama recently died after injuries given to him by a neighbor’s pet pit bull.  The dog attacked the boy while he was playing in the backyard, according to the news report on the incident.

At the time of the attack, the dog was not on a leash or being restrained by the owner in any way.  Although the dog is only eight months old, he already weighed approximately between 80 and 100 pounds.  [Read more…]

Southaven Heads-N-Tails Beer and Crawfish Festival

Heads-N-Tails Festival | Southaven, MS | Stroud, Flechas & DaltonIt’s finally crawfish season, the tastiest time of the year.  The spring and early summer months are a fun time to bring family and friends together for a feast, and to get your hands messy with some spicy crawfish and cold beer.

The second annual Heads-N-Tails Beer and Crawfish Festival is the perfect opportunity to do just that.  Held at the Snowden Grove Amphitheatre in Southaven, the festival will feature live music, lots of food, and over 100 craft beers.

Held as a benefit for the Tunica Humane Society and the Stovall’s Sacrifice for Soldiers, the event will be a great way to mingle and celebrate the season with family, friends, and the rest of the community — all for a good cause.  [Read more…]

DeSoto County, MS is Giving Green

Desoto County Soil and Water Conservation District has continued to promote green land by giving away trees as part of the annual tree giveaway program.

The agency’s yearly giveaway has been going on for 30 years and has given away hundreds of thousands of trees to be planted all around the community.  Just this year, more than 15,000 trees were donated, according to a recent article on the event.

This year, the agency held three tree giveaways in four separate locations—more citizens had the opportunity to receive some trees than ever before.  The locations included Hernando’s Gale Center, Olive Branch City Hall, Horn Lake at Latimer Lakes Park, and Southaven’s own Snowden Grove Park. Jobs Filled in DeSoto County

DeSoto County’s unemployment rate remains the lowest in three to five counties in the state of Mississippi, and the work to find available employment is still underway.  According to an article in the DeSoto Times-Tribune, even though employment is up, state services are still available to both the employer and the potential new hire to find each other.

The DeSoto County WIN Job Center director told the Southaven Rotary Club in the article that most people with adequate work qualifications have jobs and that, even though there are still people looking for jobs, the unemployment rate is low. [Read more…]

Acetaminophen: Too Much Is Dangerous

The popular painkiller acetaminophen—which can be found in over the counter products such as Extra Strength Tylenol and Advil  — is raising cause for concern.
