Infrared Light Aims To Put An End to Drunk Driving

February 7, 2013 by Leave a Comment

Law enforcement agencies across the State of Mississippi and nationally have placed a lot of emphasis in recent years on cracking down on suspected drunk drivers. Despite the fact that alcohol-related traffic fatalities are at an all-time low, elected officials continue to press police departments to lower the numbers even further.

Last year alone the number of alcohol traffic fatalities dropped by 2.5 percent, now less than 10,000 each year. Despite this historic low, authorities say that they can do more. One of the ways that some departments might just do this is through a new device that is currently being developed by a researcher named Bud Zaouk in Boston.

The idea behind the project is to prevent intoxicated drivers from getting behind the wheel of a car in the first place. [Read more…]

Bizarre Drunk Driving Case in Memphis, Tennessee, Has Some Scratching Their Heads

January 24, 2013 by Leave a Comment

In a very odd story out of Memphis, Tennessee, a woman has been arrested and charged with two crimes: driving under the influence and child endangerment. While that by itself isn’t surprising, the fact that woman did not have a child in the vehicle with her and that her blood alcohol content was not above the legal limit should raise some eyebrows.

The woman at the center of the bizarre case, Maria Guerra, was driving her vehicle alone when she crashed into the median on I-240 in Memphis over the weekend. The accident happened early Sunday morning, just south of Walnut Grove. When police arrived they tested her blood alcohol level and found it was half the legal limit. Despite this, she was charged with DUI-child endangerment because she revealed to an officer that she was four months pregnant at the time. [Read more…]

New Mississippi Law Allows Sale of Beer with Higher Alcohol Content

July 10, 2012 by GNGF Leave a Comment

A new law that is getting a lot of attention in Mississippi which will permit the sale and manufacture of higher-alcohol beer. Beer lovers pushed the new law through the Legislature earlier this year, ending Mississippi’s reign as the only state that limited beer to five percent alcohol by weight.

The new law will permit beer with eight percent alcohol by weight, or 10 percent by volume, to be sold in Mississippi. Though drinkers are thrilled, the fight was a long one, coming only after three years of lobbying.

Several manufacturers of the higher-alcohol beer were poised and ready to bring the goods into the state. Brewers including Louisiana’s Abita Brewing Co., Tennessee’s Yazoo Brewing Co. and Mississippi’s Lazy Magnolia Brewing Co. had plans ready to deliver kegs and bottles to select bars and stores the very first day such beer was allowed to be sold. DUI in DeSoto County, MS–On the Rise?

August 15, 2011 by Leave a Comment

Out of 244 arrests in DeSoto County, MS from August 8th to 14th, 46 were for DUI, or approximately 19% of all arrests in the county for that time period, according to arrest records from The DeSoto Times. As usual, DUI arrests are among the top reasons for arrest, bested only by the 47 arrests for contempt of court (also 19%). The 46 DUI arrests do not include another 14 separate counts of public drunkenness (5.7%).

Other significant arrest totals include 32 drug-related charges (13%), 17 shop-lifting arrests (7%) and 11 counts of domestic disturbance/violence (4.5%).

These arrest totals are fairly typical for a week in DeSoto County. While not out of the ordinary, it is important to not discount the effect that a DUI can have upon your driving privileges and your pocketbook. For example, a first-time DUI in Mississippi can mean $250 to $1000 in fines, up to 48 hours in jail, a suspension of your license, and mandatory attendance of the Mississippi Alcohol Safety Education Program. Repeat offenders can receive much harsher penalties. [Read more…]

August 12, 2011 by Leave a Comment

Police charged an Olive Branch resident with driving under the influence on the night of Friday, August 12th when witnesses saw sparks flying from his vehicle, according to The Commercial Appeal. According to news reports, Jon Burns, 55, was missing a tire but continued to drive, creating a shower of sparks as he was driving through the City of Frayser. He was pulled over at Overton Crossing and Lynwood Avenue after driving erratically between lanes and coming close to causing an accident, according to the police affidavit. Officers report finding an open bottle of whiskey in the front passenger seat. Burns admitted that he had been drinking the alcohol due to a recent argument with his wife. His blood alcohol content was reported as being .156. The legal blood alcohol limit in both Tennessee and Mississippi is .08. [Read more…]
