DeSoto County, Mississippi drivers should have safer commute
According to a recent article in the DeSoto Times Tribune, DeSoto County drivers should be happy to hear that their daily drives will become somewhat safer as the Mississippi Department of Transportation announced it’s cable barrier project will continue making its way down I-55.
Each year a certain percentage of MDOT’s budget must go to public safety projects. This year the department decided to spend $3.32 million to put 34 miles of cable barrier along I-55 and U.S. Highway 78.
The money is definitely needed and should be well spent creating a safer driving environment for Mississippians. Over a five year period, 375 vehicles veered off I-55 into or across the median in the barrier recommended locations in MDOT District 2, resulting in 26 fatal crashes, 32 fatalities, 13 life threatening crashes and 244 total injuries said MDOT Safety Engineer Jim Willis. Hernando, Mississippi man charged with murder
The woman was identified as 23-year-old Sarah Jones of Memphis, Tennessee. She was struck and killed on Oak Grove Road near River Oaks and Scott Road early in the morning while riding a bicycle.
Hernando Police Chief Mike Riley said the woman’s body was discovered by a passerby about 7:30 a.m. on Oak Grove Road. [Read more…]

Lawmakers have said that “small counties disfavor radar” because they fear that County deputies will abuse it. However, there is talk now that an exception may be made for DeSoto County, and Representatives Forrest Hamilton of Olive Branch and Wanda Jennings of Southaven believe that a bill tailored directly to DeSoto County may have a chance of passing the house. Byhalia, MS Motorist Killed in Southaven Tractor Trailer Accident
A tractor trailer accident claimed the life of Byhalia, MS resident Jerry R. Smith, on Wednesday, July 20th. According to The Clarion Ledger, the automobile collision occurred on State Line Road in Southaven, MS. The impact of the collision was such that the hood of Smith’s truck was lodged underneath the 18 wheeler, and emergency personnel had to pry the door open to get to him. The accident happened at around 4:15 p.m., and Smith did not survive the accident. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.
