Older Mississippi Drivers and Road Safety

As the Baby Boomer generation continues to age, one thing is certain–the roads will be increasingly filled with older drivers. Currently, thirteen percent, or 34 million Americans, are over sixty-five years of age. That number is expected to increase by 60% over the next fifteen years. Based on these numbers, it is projected that one in five drivers will be 65 or older by 2025.

While the older drivers may have more experience on the road, they are also responsible for a disproportionate number of accidents. A report released by TRIP states that although drivers over 65 account for 8% of all miles driven, they are involved in at least 17% of all reported crashes. [Read more…]

DeSoto County, Mississippi drivers should have safer commute

According to a recent article in the DeSoto Times Tribune, DeSoto County drivers should be happy to hear that their daily drives will become somewhat safer as the Mississippi Department of Transportation announced it’s cable barrier project will continue making its way down I-55.

Each year a certain percentage of MDOT’s budget must go to public safety projects. This year the department decided to spend $3.32 million to put 34 miles of cable barrier along I-55 and U.S. Highway 78.

The money is definitely needed and should be well spent creating a safer driving environment for Mississippians. Over a five year period, 375 vehicles veered off I-55 into or across the median in the barrier recommended locations in MDOT District 2, resulting in 26 fatal crashes, 32 fatalities, 13 life threatening crashes and 244 total injuries said MDOT Safety Engineer Jim Willis. Hernando, Mississippi man charged with murder

According to a recent report in the DeSoto Times Tribune, a Hernando man was charged with murder following a tragic hit and run that resulted in the death of an innocent woman.

The woman was identified as 23-year-old Sarah Jones of Memphis, Tennessee. She was struck and killed on Oak Grove Road near River Oaks and Scott Road early in the morning while riding a bicycle.

Hernando Police Chief Mike Riley said the woman’s body was discovered by a passerby about 7:30 a.m. on Oak Grove Road. [Read more…]

DeSoto County, MS Sheriff Wants Radar

DeSoto County Justice Court may be even busier if Sheriff Bill Rasco’s request for more funding from the legislature is approved. Specifically, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department is seeking more funding to purchase radar equipment to install in its patrol cars to curb the problem of citizens speeding in unincorporated areas of the County. Now there are only four (4) MS State Troopers that patrol DeSoto County, and according to officials with the Sheriff’s department, that is not enough.

Lawmakers have said that “small counties disfavor radar” because they fear that County deputies will abuse it. However, there is talk now that an exception may be made for DeSoto County, and Representatives Forrest Hamilton of Olive Branch and Wanda Jennings of Southaven believe that a bill tailored directly to DeSoto County may have a chance of passing the house. Byhalia, MS Motorist Killed in Southaven Tractor Trailer Accident

A tractor trailer accident claimed the life of Byhalia, MS resident Jerry R. Smith, on Wednesday, July 20th. According to The Clarion Ledger, the automobile collision occurred on State Line Road in Southaven, MS. The impact of the collision was such that the hood of Smith’s truck was lodged underneath the 18 wheeler, and emergency personnel had to pry the door open to get to him. The accident happened at around 4:15 p.m., and Smith did not survive the accident. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.

Mississippi Tractor Trailer Accident on I-59 Claims One Life

On Wednesday, a tractor trailer accident on I-59 in Hattiesburg, MS involving two 18-wheelers and one pickup truck claimed the life of a Foxworth MS man. According to WLBT in Jackson MS, his tractor-trailer collided with the pick-up truck then the other 18-wheeler resulting in a fiery crash that sent a smoke plume in the air that could be seen for miles. “It was horrific, it was just a very, very bad accident, one of the worst I have ever seen.” said Lamar County Coroner Anna Miller. Several other people were taken to a local hospital but no information was given on their conditions.

According to Mississippi Department of Transportation officials, one of the tractor trailers hit the foundation of an overhead highway sign causing it to fall across traffic. Also, one of the tractor trailers was loaded with power poles that were spilled across the interstate during the accident. [Read more…]

North Mississippi Tractor Trailer Accident Kills Three

A tractor-trailer collided with an Ackerman, MS high school bus carrying students on MS 8 about 40 miles south of Oxford, MS, killing three adults and hospitalizing at least 10 students. According to reports, at approximately 2 p.m. the semi-tractor trailer sideswiped the first bus before colliding into the second bus head on. Due to the severity of the crash, it took over 6 hours to clear the crash scene. The cause of the accident is still being investigated by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Desoto County, Southaven, Mississippi One-Car Accidents Leave Two People Injured

On July 9, 2010, two people were injured in two separate one-car accidents on Interstate 55 in Southaven, MS–both auto accidents occurring within the same 12 hour period. Both accidents involved situations where the drivers lost control of their vehicle, veered off of the roadway, and crashed.

Fortunately for one of the individuals, his injuries were minor. However, the other individual, a Panola County resident, was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, out of a total number of traffic fatalities in Mississippi in 2008 of 783, 503 were one car accidents. [Read more…]

Southaven, MS Car Wreck on Interstate 55 Results in Wrongful Death of Child

A tragic car accident on Interstate 55 resulted in the wrongful death of a mid-south child. 8-year-old James Thomas Gray of Southaven was killed when the compact car being driven by one of his relatives was struck from behind by another vehicle. Gray’s 9-year-old sister and the relative who was driving were also injured in the rear-end collision. The driver of the other vehicle was reportedly transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries as well.
