Jobs Filled in DeSoto County

February 25, 2014 by GNGF Leave a Comment

DeSoto County’s unemployment rate remains the lowest in three to five counties in the state of Mississippi, and the work to find available employment is still underway.  According to an article in the DeSoto Times-Tribune, even though employment is up, state services are still available to both the employer and the potential new hire to find each other.

The DeSoto County WIN Job Center director told the Southaven Rotary Club in the article that most people with adequate work qualifications have jobs and that, even though there are still people looking for jobs, the unemployment rate is low. [Read more…]

Mississippi Attorney General Clarifies Meaning of Newest Gun Law

January 2, 2014 by GNGF Leave a Comment

As a criminal defense attorney in Southaven, Mississippi, most cases I see involving weapon or gun possession charges often are based in the misunderstanding of gun laws, be it by the carrier or law enforcement.

Last month, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood attempted to clarify the state’s newest gun law, hopefully eliminating much of the confusion. Hood said gun owners with enhanced permits may take their concealed weapons to places like voting booths, government meetings, or state airports. [Read more…]

For many fans of the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast, the wait is finally over. The DeSoto Family Theatre in Southaven, Mississippi, is currently playing the “tale as old as time” through Dec. 15.

For those who have never seen Beauty and the Beast, the play is a must-watch. The classic begins when Maurice, lost in the woods on the way to the fair, seeks shelter in an old castle. “Pigeon Drop” Crime in Horn Lake, MS

November 14, 2013 by Leave a Comment

Pigeon Drop Horn Lake | Stroud, Flechas & DaltonAs a criminal defense attorney in Southaven, I’ve been asked frequently about a recent crime that has hit Horn Lake, Mississippi.

The crime? One Horn Lake resident claims to be the victim of a “pigeon drop,” according to an article from WMC-TV.

What is a pigeon drop, you ask? The term refers to a scam that often leads to theft. It is a confidence trick in which a person—known as the “pigeon” in this situation—is persuaded to give up some money in order to secure the rights to a larger or more valuable object.

After the drop has been made, the scammers make off with the money, leaving the victim with nothing.

In the process, the thief puts his money with the pigeon’s money, seemingly entrusting the victim with the large total sum. In reality, however, the money is actually never given to the pigeon, who is instead given a switched bag (usually full of newspapers or other worthless material). [Read more…]

Settlement Reached with Ole Miss in Death of Southaven Football Player

October 2, 2013 by GNGF Leave a Comment

As an experienced wrongful death attorney in Northern Mississippi, it pains me to see youth in our state have their lives cut short. I’m sure you’ve heard of the death of University of Mississippi football player Bennie Abram III during a February 2010 football practice.

Abram grew up in Southaven, Mississippi, where our office is located. His parents, Bennie and Erma Abram, sued Ole Miss in 2011 over the wrongful death of their son.

Recently, a settlement was finally reached, in which the family received $50,000 from Ole Miss and another $275,000 from an NCAA insurance policy, according to a USA Today report. [Read more…]
